Laleh Golshahi

Dr. Laleh Golshahi received her Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Alberta in 2012, with a focus on the use of in vitro methods to characterize intersubject variability in the nasal and oral airway dimensions and the respiratory deposition of inhaled aerosol. In 2014, after a postdoctoral appointment in the Department of Pharmaceutics at Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), she became an Assistant Professor in the Department of Mechanical Engineering at VCU. She is the founder and director of the Respiratory Aerosol Research and Educational (RARE) laboratory at VCU, where she focuses on novel usages of in vitro models in advancing the performance and safety of pediatric aerosol therapy and respiratory support, nasal drug delivery and environmental exposure protection.

- Address the challenge of highly variable patient anatomy by understanding how differences in nasal geometry, airflow patterns, and target site accessibility can influence deposition, absorption, and therapeutic outcomes
- Evaluate the impact of common factors such as nasal obstruction, congestion, inflammation, and disease state on delivery performance to improve study design and patient selection strategies
- Improve confidence in clinical translation by identifying approaches to account for anatomical variability during preclinical development, device optimization, and clinical evaluation to achieve more consistent treatment outcomes across patient populations
